Empower™ software controls the Agilent 1100 System via an Equinox serial card and the
RS-232 connector found on the rear panel of 1100 Series modules. Empower software
communicates with the module possessing the highest data rate, usually a detector. The
other 1100 Series modules in the system are connected as usual with CAN (controller
area network) cables. Empower software reads the configuration of the system and
downloads the module model number, serial number, and firmware version. Empower
software records this information and associates it with the data generated using those
particular modules. The Empower Message Center displays and stores all error messages
generated by the 1100 Series modules for easy troubleshooting.
1.1.1 Supported 1100 Modules
Empower software supports the degasser, but does not control it.

Empower software does not support the program functions of the autosamplers, including the
time-programmable functions located in the injector program. For example, the loop offline and
auto-additions functions are not accessible.
Empower software supports the diode array detector only when it is configured as a multiple

1.1.2 Unsupported Instruments and Functionality
Empower software does not support the following instruments:
Diode array detector (1100 DAD), unless it is configured as a multiple wavelength
detector (1100 MWD)
Fluorescence detector (1100 FLD)
Empower software does not support the following functionality:
Early Maintenance Functionality (EMF) – The EMF enables you to input usage
limits to schedule preventive maintenance based on instrument usage.
Diagnostic Tests – These tests verify that instrument functions are working correctly.
Solvent Bottle Fillings – These volumes must be entered using the 1100 hand-held
controller. When these volumes are stored in the 1100 Series modules, the values
are enacted. If you select the Error if Empty check box on the hand-held controller, a
message appears in the Empower Message Center when the bottles are empty.
Maintenance Functions – These functions allow you to perform actions necessary
to some instrument maintenance procedures.
1.1.3 1100 Controllers
The 1100 Series instruments use a control pad that is also referred to as a hand-held
controller. Empower software does not support or interact with any of these control pads.
The hand-held controller is disabled during an Empower run. You can perform EMF and
diagnostics with the controller.
1.1.4 System Configuration
Empower software supports only homogenous chromatographic systems that do not
contain instruments from multiple vendors with one exception. An 1100 Series system can
be configured with a Waters 2996 Photodiode Array Detector.
1.2 System Requirements
The following system requirements are for all Empower configurations (Enterprise
client/server system, Workgroup configuration, or Personal stand-alone workstation).
1.2.1 Operating System and Software
XP Professional or Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 2
Internet Explorer (IE) 6.0 or higher
A1100 option key disk
1.2.2 Agilent Hardware
Kit Number WAT280125 – Contains the serial card and all necessary cabling to
connect up to four systems. You can also control the Agilent 6890 and 6890+ Gas
Chromatographs using this kit.
1100 Series Control Module (Agilent part number G1323B) (Recommended) –
The 1100 Series modules lack any mechanism for direct control. Therefore, Waters
recommends having at least one 1100 Series Control Module available in the
laboratory. The 1100 Series Control Module is required to perform maintenance
functions such as changing the needle. You can also perform diagnostic testing and
EMF functionality with the 1100 Series Control Module.
1.2.3 Waters Hardware for Using the 2996 PDA Detector

Installing and Cabling 1100 Series Modules
1.4 Installing and Cabling 1100 Series Modules
Empower software controls the 1100 Series modules through an Equinox serial card
installed in the computer. To set up the 1100 Series instruments:
Install the Equinox serial card and software driver in the appropriate computer.
Connect the fanout (octopus) cable (part number WAT280127) to the serial card.
Connect the serial cable (part number WAT280130) to the octopus cable.
Connect the 9-pin RJ45 connector (part number WAT280128) to the other end of the

usually a detector. Then, connect the 9-pin RJ45 connector (part number
WAT280128) to the RS-232 port on the back panel of that instrument.
RI detector – If you are connecting a refractive index (RI) detector, you should
make the connection to the pump. Deficiencies in the RI detector firmware
prevent reliable operation through the RS-232 port.
UV detector – If you connect to a UV detector, the detector is identified as

1.5 Setting the Communication Protocol for the
The RS-232 connector on the rear panel of the 1100 Series modules is used to control the
modules from a computer through the RS-232 connection using Empower software. You
activate and configure the communication settings for the RS-232 connection using the
8-bit configuration switches next to the CAN connector on the rear panel of the module.
Only the module you are connecting to requires the correct RS-232 setting. Refer to the
1100 Series manuals for the instruments you are using for instructions on this process.
You cannot use the hand-held controller to make these settings. The configuration
changes are not maintained after you power cycle the module.
Empower software uses the following RS-232 communication protocol, which is the 1100

Once you complete the change using the 8-bit configuration switch, cycle the power on the
module to register and start the new settings.
1.5.1 Managing the 1100 Serial Connection State with Empower
Empower software establishes a serial connection using preconfigured instrument settings
when either Run Samples is started for the first time or you access the Instrument tab in
the Acquisition Server Properties dialog box in Configuration Manager for the first time.
Taking a system online and offline that has a serial instrument involved does not mean
that it connects and disconnects itself from the serial instrument itself. To force Empower
software to disconnect from a serial instrument, you must do one of the following
depending on your configuration:
Stand-alone systems – Through Task Manager, end InstrumentServer.exe.
Empower LAC/E configuration – Stop Waters Service from running.
1.6 Installing the Waters 2996 PDA Detector
A chromatographic system must be homogenous and cannot contain instruments from
multiple vendors, with one exception. The 1100 Series system can be configured with a
Waters 2996 PDA Detector. The Waters 2996 PDA Detector is connected through the
busLAC/E card in the computer. When the Waters 2996 PDA Detector is configured with
the Agilent 1100 System, you must generate a start signal from the Agilent ALS to the
Waters 2996 PDA Detector to trigger the Waters 2996 Detector upon injection.
To set up the Waters 2996 PDA Detector:
Install the appropriate busLAC/E card.
Generate a start signal by purchasing an Agilent 1100 Remote to General Purpose
cable (Agilent part number 01046-60201) and completing the procedures in
1.6.1 Triggering a Waters 2996 PDA Detector from the 1100 Modules
You must have an Agilent 1100 Remote to General Purpose cable (Agilent part
number 01046-60201) to complete this procedure.
To interface an 1100 system with a Waters 2996 PDA Detector, you must connect a
remote start cable between the two. You can use the Agilent 1100 Remote to General
Purpose cable for this purpose. To make this connection:
Connect the 9-pin connector on the Agilent Remote to General Purpose cable to the
remote output on any one of the 1100 modules in the system.
Empower Control of Autosamplers
Connect the gray (start) wire to the Event In + and the white (ground) wire to Event
In 1 on the rear panel of the 2996 Detector.
Connect all unused wires to a terminal strip to isolate them.
1.7 Empower Control of Autosamplers
Empower software supports the autosampler (G1313A) and the thermostatted
Empower software does not support the Injector program.
1.7.1 Using Multiple Trays in the Autosampler
Empower software allocates 100 vials to each tray. If two half-trays are in use, you must
add 100 to the vial position number in the right-hand tray (the B tray) to identify those
samples as residing in tray B. You can make designations using the Auto Fill function
(right-click the vial column) or with a sample set template. The following are examples of
how to designate positions for a 15-position and a 40-position tray:
1.8 Collecting Analog Data Using a Waters SAT/IN
For detectors that are not included in the Agilent 1100 stack or are not controlled on a
IEEE-488 bus, you can use a SAT/IN™ module to collect the 1-V channel into Empower.
To collect the 1-V channel using a SAT/IN module:
Make the Empower software connection to the 1100 System through an 1100
Series detector supported by Empower software or through the 1100 Series pump
in the stack.
Do not leave unconnected, loose wires. Doing so could inhibit proper
signaling to the detector or generate unwanted feedback to the 1100 system,
resulting in instrument failure.

Collecting Analog Data Using a Waters SAT/IN Module
Connect the SAT/IN module to the system via a COM port on the workstation CPU,
the I/O distribution port connected to the busLAC/E card, or an Equinox card fanout
Deliver a contact closure signal to the SAT/IN module Event In by plugging the
Agilent remote cable (Agilent part number 01046-60201) into the remote output on
the rear panel on any one of the 1100 modules in the system.
Insert the gray (start) wire of the remote cable into the Channel 1 IN + connector on
the front panel of the SAT/IN module and the brown (prepare run) wire into the
Channel 1 IN - connector on the front panel of the SAT/IN module. Refer to the
Waters Bus SAT/IN Module Installation Guide for further setup instructions.
Connect the detector to the fluidic path.
Using the hand-held controller, enter appropriate settings for the detector and
program a run time identical to that programmed in Empower software. You are not
required to program a sequence into the detector if the settings will remain the same
throughout the sample set.
Generate a start signal for the detector using the Agilent remote cable (Agilent part
number 5061-3378). Plug one end into the remote connector on any one of the
1100 modules in the system and the other into the remote connector on the

detector. Connect the 1-V cable to the SAT/IN module according to instructions in
the Waters Bus SAT/IN Module Installation Guide.
